ALKALISING PROTEIN-RICH SEEDS

Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are important to your health – you just need to consume them in the right balance. Experts estimate that the ideal ratio for consumption of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is 1:1. However, most people consume these fats in a 10:1 ratio, which means we are consuming way too many omega-6 fatty acids. Not that these fats aren’t important to your diet, but when you consume too many of them – typically in the form of vegetable oils from processed foods – inflammation occurs.

Description

The Incredible Protein-Packed Hemp Seed

Hemp Hearts are nutty and sweet like pine nuts yet sport good amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids. Flax and Chia share the Omega 3 benefit but when they get wet their mucilage fibre gets slippery and sticky. Hemp’s crunchy yet creamy texture makes it the most versatile vegan Omega 3 source. Try it in soup instead of dairy to add creaminess. It’s high protein content makes it a perfect food or addition to meal replacement bars, cereal, porridge, salads, pesto, pasta, dressings, sauces, smoothies, desserts and side dishes.

Nutrition Snapshot: 3 tablespoons off Hemp Hearts contain:

Protein 10 grams | Omega 3 2500 mg | Omega 9 1500 mg | B Complex up to 30% of RDA | Fibre 3 grams | Calcium 20 mg | Iron 5 mg (30% of RDA) | Magnesium 288 mg (70% of RDA) | Manganese 5 mg (110% of RDA)

Hemp seeds come from an industrialized, non-drug type of annual herbaceous plant (Cannabis sativa). They are an excellent source of easy-to-digest protein that include all nine essential amino acids in levels that are close to those of the complete proteins found in animal products and soy. They are also a significant source of arginine, a nonessential amino acid that appears to benefit the heart. Found in protein-rich foods, including plant foods like soy and nuts, arginine helps keep the blood vessels functioning optimally.

When it comes to the quantity of protein and other nutrients in hemp seeds, don’t let the size of this little seed fool you. 28 grams of shelled hemp seeds contains about 7 grams of easy-to-digest protein (slightly more than one large egg), 10 grams of heart-healthy fats, and nearly 8 grams of dietary fiber. Hemp is also a good source of vitamins like the antioxidant vitamin E and minerals like potassium, magnesium, and iron, to name a few. In fact, just 2 tablespoons (15 grams) of hemp powder meets more than a quarter of your daily iron needs.
