Is often said to be the best oil to use on your hair to reduce protein loss and keep it looking healthy and shiny and there is the evidence behind this claim. Further benefits of coconut oil are lice prevention, sun protection, dandruff treatment and hair loss prevention.
It has been found that coconut oil was better at preventing protein loss than other oils when applied either before or after the hair was washed. In fact, coconut oil came out on top in all of the studies and reduced protein loss in hair that was undamaged, bleached, chemically treated and UV exposed.
Coconut oil is predominantly made up of a medium-chain fatty acid called lauric acid. This gives coconut oil a long, straight structure, which is more easily absorbed deep into the hair shaft.
Coconut oil could help you grow your hair longer by:
- Moisturizing your hair and reducing breakage
- Protecting your hair from protein loss and damage when wet
- Protecting your hair from environmental damage like wind, sun and smoke
Almond oil for hair, is jam-packed with good stuff, including omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, vitamin E, and magnesium, that will help strengthen and nourish your strands. Is an emollient, meaning it can fill in gaps in your hair at a cellular level. That makes your hair feel smoother to the touch. Using almond oil on your hair gives it a softer texture over time. Once almond oil is incorporated into your hair care routine, you may also notice that your hair is easier to comb through and style.
Almond oil strengthens and repairs and can make it less prone to breakage and diminish split ends. The lubricating properties of nut oils, like almond oil, diminish friction during hair styling.
Could Almond oil make your hair grow? There aren’t clinical trials that prove that almond oil is effective in making hair grow. But here’s what we do know: almond oil can make hair stronger and less prone to split ends, which means your hair growth won’t be slowed by losing hair that becomes damaged. Almond oil contains high amounts of vitamin E, which is a natural antioxidant. When antioxidants combat the environmental stress around your hair, your hair looks younger and healthier.
Almond oil can also be used as a treatment for flaky scalp (seborrheic dermatitis) and scalp psoriasis. Rubbing a small amount of almond oil directly on your scalp increases blood flow to the area and introduces powerful antioxidants to the skin on your head.
It will leave strands smooth, shiny, and healthy looking—especially if you’re dealing with dryness at the ends of hair, which happens to be a common problem amongst women with oily and curly textures
Using almond oil nourishes and strengthens your hair, and is optimal for damaged hair, almond oil is higher in monosaturated fats (it’s made up of 70 percent of them, while coconut oil and argan oil have only six and 45 percent respectively), which helps it penetrate the hair shaft more easily. Because of its ability to sink in, almond oil is great to use on the ends of your hair, especially strands that have become particularly porous from sun damage and heat styling (and which have endured the most).
Almond oil prevents hair from absorbing too much water, this may sound counterintuitive. However, when hair absorbs too much water too quickly, it makes cuticle scales stand up. This leaves hair more porous and ultimately susceptible to dehydration and breakage. Healthy hair has a lower porosity and is somewhat hydrophobic to balances the amount of water that hair absorbs. So basically, almond oil for hair yields healthy hair, which will thus show itself in shine and smoothness.
Sweet Orange Essential Oil
Sweet orange oil has a lot of amazing benefits for your hair, it has a soothing effect on irritated skin, which is wonderful news for your scalp. It’s both antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, which makes it perfect for those prone to dandruff and other scalp issues. Is an excellent moisturizer for brittle hair, you can treat dry or damaged hair that can cause split ends as its known to improve the smoothness of strands, orange oil works as a natural moisturizer and will increase the elasticity of hair follicles. Sweet Orange Oil infuses vitamin C into the hair and strengthens your roots which is essential for hair growth.
The essential oil’s properties reduce the number of blocked pores, allowing your hair to fully exfoliate. Sweet orange will make your hair smell fantastic (for both men and women) without expensive, toxic perfumes. The fruit’s oil is rich in antioxidants for healthier, happier hair. For those with oily hair, the essential oil has intense antibacterial activity.
The antibacterial qualities contained in the citrus flavanones of the orange make it suitable as a treatment for hair infested with lice.
Most OTC (over-the-counter) solutions for a head full of lice contain high levels of a toxic pesticide known as lindane. This is actually a chemical which many countries around the world ban for agricultural use. So why on earth would you want to get anywhere near the stuff, let alone wash your hair with it?
The natural antioxidants and antibacterial qualities of the orange essence help to ward off any lice that might be in your hair. They also help give your hair a protective coat that keeps them from coming back. The powerful citrusy odor repels them, much like eucalyptus or lemongrass oil does to mosquitos. And the anti-inflammatory agents in the oil will also kill off any eggs that might have been laid. Plus, they’ll reduce any itchiness or irritation that usually occurs on the scalp during an infestation.
These same anti-inflammatory agents also kill off any dead skin cells on your scalp which normally lead to dandruff. So by treating the source of the problem, not only the symptoms, you can effectively use orange oil as a natural substitute for anti-dandruff shampoos that can leave some hair types feeling dry or brittle.
Peppermint Essential Oil
While peppermint oil may be known for some skin care benefits, it’s also good for your hair and scalp. It may help with dryness, itching, or other scalp problems.
The benefits of peppermint essential oil can be described as antimicrobial, insecticidal and pesticidal, analgesic and anesthetic, vasodilating (and vasoconstricting), anti-inflammatory.
Some people have used the oil as a remedy for hair loss. This may be because the menthol in peppermint essential oil is a vasodilator, and vasodilators improve blood flow. In many instances (such as in female or male pattern baldness), hair loss occurs due to starved blood flow to hair follicles. Increasing circulation with a vasodilator like peppermint could potentially improve hair growth and prevent some hair loss.
Peppermint menthol also imparts a freshened smell and tingly sensation on the skin and scalp. Peppermint oil is extracted from the leaves of the peppermint plant, which contains over 40 different chemical compounds
For your hair, peppermint has been known to stimulate the hair follicles, promote growth, and rebalance the scalp, says Paula Simpson, biochemist, author, and formulation expert. Plus, since it’s an essential oil that has microbial, insecticidal, and anti-inflammatory properties, “it can help with itching of the scalp,”
Various studies have looked into the effects of using peppermint oil on your hair, and the overall findings have pointed to hair growth promoting properties, along with clarifying benefits.
Peppermint oil can also be a solid remedy to an itchy scalp. “Its ability to neutralize certain pathogenic micro-organisms on the skin’s surface makes it an interesting and effective ingredient for combatting a dry, itchy scalp,
When it comes to clarifying, the active ingredient is particularly beneficial for oily hair types. “Peppermint oil works best if you have oily hair, and is more difficult to use if you have dry or brittle hair,” says Dr. King. Using it regularly will regulate oil production and buildup on the scalp, which will result in more shine, too.
For optimal results, use 1 – 2 times per week, dampen hair slightly with water and very gently work 4 or 5 drops (depending on hair length and texture) through your hair and scalp before shampooing to nourish your hair, before blow drying to protect your hair or as a leave-in to give the ultimate smoothness and shine.
Hot Oil Treatment:
Warm a small amount of oil in the microwave. You shouldn’t have to warm it for more than a few seconds. The oil should be warm and not hot to the touch. Apply the warm oil to your scalp and massage in.
Use a wide-tooth comb to disburse the oil down the hair shaft and cover with a shower cap for 20 minutes, prior to shampooing.
To remove excess oil buildup, try NuLengths Detox Natural Cleanser.
External use only! Avoid getting into eyes. Do not use on a broken scalp. In the unlikely event of skin irritation, discontinue use. Individual results may vary.
