Protein- and Pigment- Packed Algae: Spirulina is an excellent source of numerous vitamins and minerals, including vitamin e, manganese, iron, and selenium. Sixty to 70 percent of the dry weight of this green food is protein, which includes all nine essential amino acids. Spirulina also contains gamma-linolenic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid that—unlike other omega-6 fatty acids—appears to reduce inflammation, not promote it. The vibrant green color of spirulina is the result of several beneficial plant pigments, like chlorophyll and phycocyanin, which also contribute to its health-promoting properties. Chlorophyll appears to bind to and eliminate potential cancer-causing compounds in the body, preventing their absorption, and phycocyanin may help reduce inflammation while protecting organs like the brain and liver. Spirulina also contains cancer-fighting carotenoids like beta-carotene, though their trademark orange hues are masked by chlorophyll’s rich green color.

A Free Radical-Scavenging Antioxidant: The combination of powerful compounds in spirulina—mainly beta-carotene and phycocyanin—contribute to its strong antioxidant activity and ability to protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. In 2010, researchers found that spirulina extracts exerted greater free radical–scavenging abilities than did extracts of phycocyanin alone (suggesting that there is a likely synergistic effect between its compounds). Researchers have also found that the compounds in spirulina may help block pathways in the body that can lead to inflammation. As a result, it may help reduce pain and inflammation associated with arthritis; ease allergy symptoms by blocking the release of histamine, which causes runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing; and even boost the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut (like Lactobacillus acidophilus), which may help calm irritable bowel syndrome, improve digestion and nutrient absorption, and treat conditions like diarrhea following antibiotic use. Spirulina may also help boost the immune system by increasing the production of antibodies and other cells that are useful in fighting off infections and even cancer.

Cholesterol-Lowering Super Green: Spirulina may also help reduce some of the risk factors associated with heart disease, such as high cholesterol levels. Several animal studies have found that diets supplemented with spirulina may lower total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels, and reduce the accumulation of fat in the liver that often occurs from eating a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet.
